There is a dog that gave birth in a school at least 8 puppies. I was going to check on them today and only found one puppy close to where they were originally. I couldn't find the mom and the rest of the puppies so I decided to take her with me. I received a call later that she was found in another place but still at the school. Apparently she moved them because of the rain. A vet tech is taking care of the puppy that I found alone earlier.
The mom and the puppies need to be moved out of the school before they got killed. We need a foster home and donations.

Christina and I found Harry and Hermione while we were feeding Sam and Sasha. Their condition was bad, very weak and with some mange. Their feet are deform--especially Harry's--apparently due to malnutrition. We take them to the vet and now they are staying at my house.

Unfortunately Peggy's 6 puppies were euthanized because of a distemper risk. It was very hard for me because just the day before I saw them playing and looked so happy. This are the last pictures I took of them.

The puppy survived the rainy night, although i found her alone--Peggy moved all the others and left this one behind. I got confused and thought there were 7, but i think there are only 6--I will check again anyway. they were taken to the vet.
I notice the puppy's eyes looked better and she opened them. When they shaved her at the vet, we saw that the wound in the tigh cound be a bite and it was infected. The skin of her back was infected too--the area covered with maggots. She ate a lot! So I think she will be all right.

A real horror tale

I had a terrible morning. I don't want to upset you but I need to tell people what I saw at the beach today.
I went to see Peggy's puppies because last night was raining. She have moved them to another location and seemed to be ok but i found yet another puppy--a 7th puppy, a female. She was alone, hungry and all wet. She was near the dirt road. When I picked her up--it was terrible! She was alive but have worms coming out of her back. I used water and Frontline (the only thing I had at the moment) to take away as many worms as possible, but more kept coming out. I decided to leave her with her mom while I get back home and to get a bucket of water, shampoo and a towel. I came back and bathed her. While bathing her i found a small wound in her tigh--that's where all the worms were coming from and the puppy had clusters of hundred of eggs around her back. The puppy had worms in her eyes too!!! I desinfected the tigh wound and filled it with antibiotic. I used another antibiotic for her eyes and gave her some NutriCal. I didn't know what else to do--vet clinics are closed on Sundays in this area. I put her back with the others hoping Peggy doesn't abandon her. They are only 21 days old and this puppy was slightly smaller than the others--they need their mother.

Chelsea and Kelsey plus the 2 new male puppies--Davey and Jack are currently at my house. They were already vaccinated and they are in good health.
Four of Betsy's puppies were recovered from the bushes and they are currently at the vet waiting to be transported to their foster home. There are 2 boys and 2 girls (first 2 pictures).
I finally found Peggy's puppies (20 days old). There are 6 beautiful babies (last 2 pics). They are still at the beach and looking for sponsors.

There are 2 puppies. They are the same age and size as Chelsea and Kelsey, but they are male. It seems that they had mange at some point, but their hair is growing back.

One of Betsy's puppies died during the week, so there are 5 now. I think it was the same that I found last saturday tangled with the grass--he seemed week the last time I saw him. They are in a place almost unreachable--you have to crawl under a fence then walk a little and they are under some kind of bushes that are all tangled and full of thorns. Sometimes I can see them, sometimes it's imposible, depending where they are.

I KEPT THEM FOR THE NIGHT BUT I CAN'T FEED THEM WHILE I'M WORKING, SO I TOOK THEM TO CAROL JANUS' HOUSE. SHE'S GOING TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. Chelsea and Kelsey are very healthy and they just got their vaccinations.

I found Betsy's puppies today. There are at least 5 of them. I found them because one of them was crying desperately, in a way that was not normal. She was alone and away from the others because one of her paws was tangled with the grass and couldn't move. Her paw was swollen and she had an eye infection. I think she has was not eating well either. They should be around 3 weeks old but looked younger. Betsy is very skinny and she may not be feeding them well enough.

Last week 9 puppies and an adult dog were rescued. Dylan, Dixie, Daisy, Ashley, Amy, Marysol, Rosy, Sophia, Champ and Cindy.
This week we have 2 more and possibly 4 or 5 more. The 2 small ones--Kelsey and Chelsea are at my home. I was told that there were some other spotted puppies somewhere near the river but I didn't see them yesterday. I will look again, of course.

In the last couple of weeks there have been 17 or more new puppies at the beach. At some point there were 12 at the same time. Some of them have disappeared--I've only known that 3 were taken and adopted, I'm not sure of the others.
This week we have 3 female black/white puppies, extremely emaciated and full of parasites and one of them died. Then 2 smaller younger males were abandoned close to the other 2 females. Then a red puppy, found in the same place as the others.
And a couple of days ago I found 8 new puppies in another area. There were so hungry that they were eating a ninth dead puppy. That was shocking...
Of all those 14 puppies now there are 9. I'm looking for someone who can help them.
(I don't have pictures of all of the puppies)

Ok. I'm having troubles uploading pictures but here's an update: Some of the new dogs were rescued by Ginny, Chrissy and Alicia. Rhonda (white/brown fluffy--picture in last blog), Lynn (cream--picture in last blog) and a young boxer girl who was really in bad shape. Rhonda is around a year old. Her health is good but she was limping. Lynn is fine but she's heartworm possitive. Unfortunately the boxer pup didn't make it. She was hospitalized over the weekend but died on monday.
I will post the pictures as soon as I can.

Of all 5 Gretchen's puppies, only Kyle survived. Kody, Kenny and Keith died from distemper first. Then the remaining 2, Kasey and Kyle got sick with parvovirus and Kasey--the only female of the litter--didn't make it.

Of Karen's 7 puppies (the ines rescued from a hole), one of them died of parvovirus. The other 6 never got sick and are fine. Jade got sick too but is fine now.

My baby Mitzi is now in NY with Chrissy.

This is Playa, a puppy that was rescued a couple of weeks ago (see post from May 5). She was anemic and weak and she was not eating by herself. Now she's fine and a little crazy. She just have a mild skin problem but getting better.

Update on Gretchen's puppies

It's been raining a lot lately and it's not safe for the puppies.
I could only take 3 of the puppies to the vet on Tuesday--2 males and a female (Kody, Kenny and Kasey). Kenny was the smallest, and he had a labored breathing. The little guy survived for two more days and then died on Thursday at 4:42pm.

I took two more on Thursday--two more males (Keith and Kyle). To my surprise there were a 6th puppy--still at the beach with Gretchen. I will keep trying to get him/her.

Gretchen has 5 puppies at the side of the road to the beach. The puppies are 4 weeks old and I think there are 3 males and 2 females. Some of them look a bit anemic. I only dewormed 3 or them because I could reach the other two. If someone can help rescue them or adopt them, please do.

Today I found 2 puppies completely hungry and a mangy female. The female doesn't look like the puppies' mom. The puppies are around 2 months old. I only could deworm the black one. The other one was too scared. (first 2 pics)
I could grab one of the puppies--a male--from the dog at the side of the road and he's a bit anemic. There are at least 3 puppies behind a fenced area. I hope someone can rescue them soon. If someone is interested in adopting them, let me know. (last 2 pics)

I want to thanks the Humacao Pitbull Club for accompanying me last Sunday to feed the dogs. That was cool. We found where one of the females has her puppies. This is the puppy I saw the other day with her mom near my house. Apparently a moron neighbor took the puppy and left her in a nearby park with come meat in a plate. Another neighbor told me he saw a white puppy in the park, so I went there and found out it was the same puppy. It was raining and she was alone. I still haven't seen the mom. I took her home but can't keep her for long. This baby needs a foster home.
I took some pictures of the puppy with my big babies Katya and Maya. Katya likes the puppy but she's too rude playing. And Maya doesn't like the puppy at all--she's barking at her all the time and runs when the puppy gets close.

They are not from the beach but they are close to where I live. I have seen the mom before but I didn't know she has a puppy (4 or 5 weeks old). I saw them today in front of an abandoned house close to my house. Apparently they are living in the patio and the open "marquesina" of that house. I don't know if the neighbors are ok with that, if not they may call animal control anytime. So, if someone can sponsor them to get them out of there as soon as possible, please do!

Karen has her puppies in a place sooo unreachable... She chose a hole under a section of a road near the shore. The place is at the end of a green fence with a PELIGRO sign on it. At the end of the fence there's a tree and close to the tree's base, there's the hole.

So many things happened. Kyley (the grayish chocolate with white puppy--first pic)has been rescued. This rescue was kind of a nightmare. I found Kyley quickly but I didn't see the other dogs that I was supposed to take to the vet--it was raining a lot (and I had a big headache), so I supposed they were hiding somewhere. At the same time I was told where Karen's puppies are, but they where unreachable inside a "hole" (second pic).
One of the dogs I was supposed to take yesterday, was a white Chihuahua (third pic)--but unfortunately I found her dead today. Apparently she died yesterday.

Here are the new guys of the week. Most of them are young pups. The boxer (last 2 pics) is very thin and has a wound on his neck.

Just today I saw a man with 2 small children--not even in school age--and the bastard hit a small dog on the head with a heavy stick. I stopped and told him a couple of things like--hey man, you can't do that, much less in front of your children... if they grow up to be disgusting people, now you know who to blame... and so on". The dog was just sitting on the sand when they approached and out of nowhere he hit him/her. The poor pup was so scared that even I couldn't get close, s/he just ran away as fast as s/he could. With this attitude coming from their parents, children are getting that this is ok, "it's just a dog" and tomorrow could be just "a human" they just "killed... That's how tomorrow's criminals are formed.

Roy was transfered to a foster home today. He looks gorgeaous and happy. He likes to give bear hugs. He still has some dermatitis but mange is gone.

Something about horses

It's very common, here in PR, to abandon a horse when he or she gets hurt--but that doesn't make it right. I went to the beach yesterday at 9am and I saw this horse at the side of the road to the beach. I thought she was dead, but when I got close she raised her head to look at me. She was down and I saw that she had a deep wound in one of her back legs and several other minor wounds. I gave her water, and not knowing what is the agency in charge to deal with a situation like this, I called the police. They told me they will call the proper agency. I got back home to study but kept thinking about the horse all day until I decided to go back to the beach at 4pm to see if someone has taken care of the situation. To my surprise--yes, I'm still a little naive--the horse was still there--agonizing!!! I called back the police and they assured me they have called someone to take of this. I talked to a couple of people at the beach and a young man told me he also called someone in San Juan (in charge of cases like this one)in the morning, and nothing has been done yet. A couple told me that they have seen the horse around the night before but she was standing. Finally, the horse died at 4:21pm in front of me. I was the last person to caressed her and the last person she saw.
Seriously--what kind of person abandons a sweet horse like her? And what kind of government agencies let a horse agonize all day like that??? I would like to know what is the agency responsible for this lack of humanity. Why it took them so long to do something?

New puppy

I saw this puppy this afternoon. A loony--really, this guy seemed mentally ill--kicked something in the sand and keep walking. Suddenly I heard the puppy whining... She was hungry and since there is no place at the beach now closer a a safer place anymore, I just moved the puppy and left some food for her. I also dewormed her. She must be around 7 weeks old.
If someone wants to help her, let me know.

New rescues

A bunch of dogs were rescued this week: Megan, Macy, Maddison, Jenny and Tracy. Tracy had a hernia and had surgery--read ginny's blog for more details (i'm not really good with details and besides, english is not my first language and Ginny explains better).
I want to thank a wonderful couple I met the other day at the beach--Lila and David. they were on vacation but they wanted to help somehow. They helped a lot already, including transporting the dogs to the vet and/or foster homes. They also rescued a puppy--named Coqui--at a beach in Humacao.

Last puppies to arrive

These puppies are currently at the beach. The black/white siblings--has been there for some time, they are at the side of the road to the beach. The other 2 pups arrived at the beach last week. The one in last picture is not a puppy but this pure-bred Lab is very sweet--follows me everywhere. There is a Rottweiler too, Terry--she's very sweet too. Next time i'll post a pic of her.

Puppy room: demolished

As I said before the old building at the beach is been demolished and last saturday it was the turn of the room known as puppy room--where the small puppies used to take cover.
Right now there are a couple of puppies running around the beach exposed to cars and the not so good intentions of some people.

As I mentioned before the old boat house at the beach is been demolished. That's a good thing, but I'm worried about the dogs. Puppies were usually safer around this building. Now that the municipality is "fixing" the place to get the attention of tourism, I wonder what will happen to the dogs. People will continue dumping dogs and puppies here--no one is doing anything to prevent that, they will just kill them.

Four puppies have been rescued this week.
The place where the puppies usually are at the beach--an old boathouse--is going to be demolished and a lot of modifications has been going on at the beach lately. While this is usually good, it may not be good for the dogs. The beach is being "remodeled" for tourism--and in this island, usually where's there's tourism involved, total erradication of dogs and cats follows. Let's see what will happen...
